Drama Club

The St. Cecilia School Drama Club is a wonderful way for students to build self-esteem and express themselves in a safe yet fun environment. The objective of the Drama Club is to teach the fundamentals of acting while working on communication, with special emphasis on listening. Each school year Drama Club is divided into a fall semester session and a separate spring semester session.

Fall “Improv”

The fall semester session is open to all students in grades 5 and 6. During the fall session Drama Club members become familiar with the fundamentals of acting through improvisational games, scene study, and master classes. Parents can expect their children to gain the following from their participation:

  • An introduction to basic acting technique and terminology
  • A safe space to be creative and silly
  • Encouragement to have fun and take risks
  • The opportunity to explore any hidden or newfound talents
  • Improved presentation and communication skills

The session culminates with the students performing in a two night improvisational show where the students demonstrate their new skills in front of an audience; performing improvisations, scenes and/or monologues.

Spring Musical

The spring semester for the Drama Club is begins with an open audition for all students in grades 4 – 8. The auditions are used to cast for roles in the culminating musical. During the spring session students discover the joys of performing, while being instructed in organization, memorization, movement, vocal projecting, and singing. Parents can expect their children to gain the following from their participation:

  • Improved self confidence
  • The ability to accept a challenge
  • An appreciation for working as a team
  • An understanding of blocking and theatre terminology
  • Encouragement to take risks and have fun

The Spring Musical is performed to sold out audiences on a Friday and Saturday night, concluding with a matinee on Sunday. Past Drama Club performances have been: Disney’s Aladdin, The Wizard of OZ, Into the Woods, A Night on Broadway, and The Ghost Light. The student actors perform in complete costumes performing on stage with professional sound, lighting, and sets.

Performing is not only a lot of fun, but that it can truly be one of the best experiences of a student’s life.

Parent Involvement

While there is a nominal fee for students participating in both sessions of Drama Club parent involvement is required for the Spring Musical to off set the cost of production.

The St. Cecilia School Drama Club remains under the direction of Ms Katy Porter, and Mr. Gene Ide, Faculty Advisor.
